Bishop ahead of the game with first Newman icon
Two years ago, The Bishop of Leeds, Marcus Stock, was so convinced that Blessed John Henry Newman would be canonised that in anticipation, he commissioned an icon of the great theologian from the renowned iconographer Ian Knowles.
The bishop’s confidence was not misplaced and Pope Francis will canonise him on Sunday 13th October – the first Englishman born since the 17th century to be made a saint.
Now the Diocese of Leeds – in addition to having the first of a very few parishes in the country named for Newman – may also now have its first icon of him.
Icons are regarded as more a form of prayer than of art and so are said to be written, rather than painted. The iconographer’s hand is guided by God and these spiritual works can take years to produce.
